Small Worlds

Published on 1 September 2026 at 15:04

This collection explores the small and often overlooked forms of life that exist within our everyday surroundings. Through close-up photographs of insects, animals and plants, the series draws attention to the relationships that connect individual organisms within the natural environment.

Bees and butterflies are shown interacting with flowers, while smaller and less traditionally celebrated creatures appear amongst leaves, branches, webs and the ground. By photographing these subjects closely, their scale is transformed, encouraging the viewer to notice details that might otherwise remain invisible.

The collection is particularly interested in the relationship between creature and environment. Plants become more than backgrounds; they provide food, shelter and habitats, revealing the interconnected nature of the ecosystem. The variety of subjects also challenges the idea that nature’s value is determined by conventional ideas of beauty.

The photographs ultimately encourage a slower way of looking. They ask the viewer to pause, observe and recognise the complexity of the natural world that exists around us every day. What may appear insignificant from a distance becomes intricate and meaningful when we take the time to look closely.
